Chocolate Rose

Floribunda

The Chocolate Rose is also known as The Pashley Rose. It’s offical name has
not yet been registered so we here at Peter Beales know the rose as The
Chocolate Rose.

The rose was presented to James Sellick, the owner of Pashley Manor, as a
house warming gift in 1981 by Dr Robert Henderson. Dr Henderson was a keen
amateur rose breeder from Horsmonden in Kent.

The rose prospered at Pashley Manor and when Peter Beales spotted this
unusual rose, on one of his visits, it was agreed, with the kind permission
of Dr Henderson’s widow, to instigate the propagation of the rose. Peter
Beales started to cultivate the rose in 2004.

After a visit to America in 1930 Dr Robert Gregory Henderson became
interested in assisted respiration and he and a hospital engineer built the
first iron lung in Britain in their spare time. It was used to save the life
of a boy in 1933 and many hundreds of machines were manufactured.
